About This Blog

Welcome! | 환영합니다!

Hi, I'm Irene, a native Korean who loves explaining why Koreans say and do the things we do.

I grew up in Korea and never questioned how we speak or behave. Then I spent several years living abroad, and suddenly I was the one asking, "Why did they say it that way?" When I asked for explanations, the answer was often, "That's just how we do things." That told me what happened, but never why.

After I came back to Korea, I noticed that many foreigners were asking me the same kinds of questions I once asked abroad. Why do Koreans ask your age so quickly? Why do we say "No" when someone gives us a compliment? Why is "Have you eaten?" a way of saying "I care about you"? The more I explained, the more I realized these are not just language differences. They show how Koreans think about respect, relationships, and connection.

What you'll find here

  • Korean Language: everyday words and expressions like 눈치, 정, and 대박, explained by how Koreans really use them, not just dictionary meanings.
  • Korean Culture: customs that can look surprising at first, from sharing one stew to taking off shoes at home.
  • Korean Lifestyle: daily life in Korea, such as delivery, recycling, public transportation, and convenience stores.

Every post is written from my own experience as a native speaker, with the cultural background behind it.
