“대박!” (Daebak!)
If you watch Korean shows or spend time with Koreans, you've probably heard this word quite a lot.
As a Korean, I don't really stop and think about what 대박 means when I say it. It just comes out.
A friend tells me some surprisingly good news?
“대박!”
Someone shows me something really impressive?
Again, “대박!”
But translating it into English isn't as simple as it seems. Sometimes it's “Amazing!” Sometimes it's “Wow!” And sometimes it's closer to “No way!”
It really depends on what's happening.
What Does 대박 (Daebak) Mean?
Originally, 대박 means something like a big success, huge hit, or great fortune.
You can still hear it used that way today.
그 영화 대박 났어.
That movie was a huge hit.
But in everyday conversation, we often use 대박 simply as a reaction.
Suppose your friend tells you she won free plane tickets.
대박! 진짜?
Wow! Really?
Or you arrive somewhere and the view is much better than you expected.
와, 대박이다.
Wow, this is amazing.
That's probably the easiest way to get a feel for the word. Instead of trying to match 대박 with one English word, think of it as something Koreans say when something is surprising, impressive, or way beyond what they expected.

But 대박 Isn't Always Positive
This is the part that can be confusing.
Because 대박 is often translated as “awesome” or “amazing,” you might think we only use it when something good happens.
We don't.
Let's say your friend tells you:
“I was complaining about my boss in a text message... and accidentally sent it to my boss.”
My first reaction might be:
대박…
Obviously, I don't mean “Awesome!”😅
It's more like:
“Oh my gosh…”
“No way…”
“That's crazy…”
The way you say 대박 matters a lot.
A bright “대박!” and a slow “대박…” can give you quite different feelings even though the word itself hasn't changed.
대박 and 진짜 Are Often Heard Together
Another expression you'll often hear with 대박 is 진짜 (jinjja).
대박, 진짜?
No way, really?
We Koreans say this combination very naturally when someone tells us something hard to believe.
The two words aren't the same, though.
진짜 means “really,” “real,” or sometimes “seriously,” while 대박 is your reaction to what you've just heard.
If you already know 진짜, listening for 대박, 진짜? in Korean conversations can be a fun way to pick up how the two work together.

Do Koreans Still Say 대박?
Yes, we do.
It's true that Korean slang changes incredibly fast, especially among younger people. Some expressions become popular and disappear before people my age even catch up with them.😅
But 대박 has been around for a long time and is still perfectly familiar.
That doesn't mean Koreans go around shouting “대박!” at everything, of course.
But you will definitely hear it in everyday conversations, on TV, online, and among people of different ages.
Native Korean's Tip
My advice is not to force yourself to use 대박 just because you've learned it.
Listen first.
Notice when Koreans say it and, especially, how they say it.
Sometimes you'll hear an excited:
와, 대박!
Other times it's just:
대박…
And very often:
대박, 진짜?
Once you start noticing those little differences, 대박 becomes much easier to understand.
And one day, someone may tell you something surprising and “대박!” will just come out before you even think about it.
That's probably when you'll know you've really picked it up.
